Italy has an advantage shared by only a few other countries; a tradition of minting coins from before the birth of Christ to today. Whether your preference is issues of the individual states (such as Naples) or a specific era (such as the Republic since 1946), you will find plenty to keep you active and interested. There are also a wide range of denominations from the "lowly" centesimo to the 100,000 Lire gold issues. You may also decide to expand your collection by adding related issues such as the coins of Vatican City offered elsewhere in our World Minors and World Coins departments. Lots of options to explore.
But to explore them well, you are going to need at least one good general reference. We highly recommend that any World Coin collector invests in one (or several) of the "Century Editions" of "The Standard Catalog of World Coins" by Chester Krause and Clifford Mishler. Once you have gone deep enough into any one subject or specialty, you may want additional works for that interest. But the "SCWC" is still the best place to start for anyone.
