Austria is a country that people think of in terms of pictures in their minds, images they have carried in their dreams. The architecture of Vienna, the serenity of a mountain village, the crisp snow of Innsbruck; all seem to be part of our collective memory. And many of the coins have carried such images since before the time of Maria Theresa. Their "business strikes" made for every day circulation show the same attention to detail as their commemorative issues and they can make some beautiful collections as well.
We do not know of any really great reference works in English for the wide range of coins and numismatic material offered by Austria. We will just suggest that you start with one (or several) of the "Century Editions" of "The Standard Catalog of World Coins" by Chester Krause and Clifford Mishler. From there, as your interest and knowledge grows, you may want to acquire one of the many fine works published in the German language to cover all (or parts) of the coins this country offers.
