It was designed by Christian Gobrecht and has five major varieties. They are the No Stars Obverse (1837-38), the Stars Obverse (1838-53), the Arrows at Date (1853-55), the Legend Obverse (1860-73 and again 1875-91) and the Heavier Weight, Arrows at Date (1873-74).
