In the 20th century we have had a change in our coins from decorating them with symbols to decorating them with portraits of some of our most-loved leaders; people like Thomas Jefferson and George Washington and, on this series of dimes, Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Designed by John R. Sinnock, the simplicity of this series has always found a welcome home with collectors. It has been issued in two metals; silver was used from 1946 to 1964 (when the price of silver started to match the face value of the coin) and since 1965 in a clad composition.
A good reference work for those more interested in this type of coin is The Complete Encyclopedia of U.S. and Colonial Coins by Walter Breen.
