The Mercury Dime is really a misnomer for the Winged Liberty Head Dime. The design by Adolph Weinman actually represents Liberty; the wings crowning her hat are to show liberty of thought. Whatever you decide to call them, they were made from 1916-1945 and have been a favorite with collectors since the first years of their issue.
Good reference works for those more interested in this type of coin are The Complete Encyclopedia of U.S. and Colonial Coins by Walter Breen and Treasure Hunting Mercury Dimes by John Wexler and Kevin Flynn.
