Gold! No single word seems to more stir the soul and inspire dreams. So soft you can shape it by hand, it cannot be dissolved by the strongest of acids. It can lay on the floor of an ocean or in a tomb for thousands of years and look like the day it was made, yet if dropped on the floor it can be marred forever. No collection seems complete without at least one gold coin. It is the eternal metal to always quicken the human heart. Because of its great interest and crossover with other areas of numismatics, we also offer gold as part of our Colonial Era and Medieval Era sections under World Coins. Feel free to check there for some early gold issues.
Beginning gold coin collectors may want to invest in one (or several) of the Century Editions of The Standard Catalog of World Coins by Chester Krause and Clifford Mishler. Another good general work is Gold Coins of the World by Robert Friedberg. But nothing will beat specialized works specific to the series you are most interested in.
